Birdsong & Blossom

Artist Statement - Spread my Wings

Hooray its spring! This is a cluster of birds noisily chattering away to each other in the branches of a blossoming tree. I have happy memories of loud birdsong keeping me awake in the evenings as a child.

Old plates from my childhood were used to remind me of these times. The rather silly crazy birds are supposed to reflect the extravagance of life & the joy of spring.

Artist Statement - Awakening

Winter is the time when everything is asleep, hidden, frozen and grey.
Then, one day everything changes.
You can literally feel the difference in the air. First signs.
Tiny spots of bright green on the ground, a warm, pleasant wind, birds singing in the very early morning when the sun is just about to rise….
The power of nature begins to wake up, moving all the juices in the sleeping trees, feeding energy to the whole surrounding world.
Yes. Spring is coming.

Artist Statement - Ornithophobia

This mosaic was made as part of an artistic collaboration which resulted in a book published in April 2013  by French mosaic artist Muriel Ligerot, entitled 103 Drawings Interpreted in Mosaic. I chose this particular drawing to interpret because, though I have a horror of birds, the image was so striking and the colours so varied, and yet still giving the impression of black. I hope that I have managed to capture this in the different colours and kinds of glass which I have used.

Artist Statement - Have you never heard a penguin sing?

I love the indivdual characters in these South African Jackass Penguins. The humour and personality of each one is obvious and intensified by their simple monochrome costume
