Superplume (Hazards) | Time Cup (Groundwater) | Wildfire (Hazards) |
Artist Statement
Earth, fire and water are the elements I chose. I wanted to represent their essential rather than academic qualities.
Ultimately I fixed on some of the abiding impressions they suggested. I used handed painted ceramics which do not allow for excess of detail. Their strength is in intensity of colour and texural depth.
I hope "Superplume" describes some of the rage of energy in that phenomenon. "Wildfire" the chaos of conflagration. "Time Cup" as the title refers to the partially defined grail outline, to the aeons of time the processing of groundwater involves.

Deep Ocean |
Artist Statement
Earth's oceans cover 70% of the planets surfaceand are the source of 97% of our water supply. Our planet is unique within our Solar System in that no other planet has liquid water and the oceans are home to many forms of life.
I am new to the art of mosaic but have been inspired by the fantastic work of the modern artists. I have used glass nuggets, iridescent tiles, mirror tiles, beads, shells and starfish to present this abstract mosaic of the deep ocean, which illustrates diversity and movement.

Soil, Seed, Life (Soil) | Soil, Seed, Life - detail (Soil) |
Artist Statement
I was inspired by the natural beauty of planet seeds, these wonderful time capsules, vessels traveling through time and space. The process led me to consider what was necessary for seeds to develop into life giving ingredients without which we could not survive. This highlighted the importance of soil the provider of nourishment, the incubator for birth. Soils are truly amazing. Neutral tones in matt ceramic provide the background for the seed pods. The seeds were formed from recycled materials, beautiful china, gold and pearls to represent their preciousness. Seeds are scattered and seeds are sown.
My hope is that this piece will help sow a seed for change in protecting our wondrous planet.

I made these mosaics using an electric tile cutter as well as hand tools.
This leaves the glaze slightly chipped, so the grout bleeds in to the surface the way that ink bleeds in to paper. As i see this this technique as "drawing with grout", this eft is quite apt.
The subject is the big polluters that we rely on for our everyday existence. I dont hold myself apart from this.
I used electricity and cement in making these mosaics. We are all implicated.
