Bioluminescence - A glimpse of an unfamiliar world
There is an abundance of life thriving beyond the reach of the sunlight which is part of the important question focused on by International Year of Planet Earth's theme, Ocean. I have focused on some of the strange, colourful and diverse animals living in this ecosystem.
I have used metallic, pearlescent and iridescent tiles to suggest their bioluminescence (a chemical process that generates light) hoping to give that almost glowing effect to simulate their luminosity. The dark background is both to enhance this effect and stress the absolute darkness of the habitat.
Vulnerability
My abstract piece represents the impact of natural hazards, by using curves and organic shapes to suggest the flowing movement of floodwater, lava flow etc. With the geometric grid below to give a sense of solidity, but solidity being swallowed up. This gives a layering effect and the use of smalti against glass and ceramic indicates the varying depths. The colours are the colours of our earth. I have chosen the pallet from the colour variations in the polished stones that are used in the piece.

Artist Statement
My main aim is to produce stunning eye catching works form 100% recycled materials, the glass used is found in skips and off cuts from stained glass artists, the wood is off cuts from Oak timber frame buildings. I wanted the work to be bold, chunky and very solid feeling but also i did not want them to look like found objects/junk sculpture.
I think we, AD Treepirate, chainsaw sculptor and i have made it just the way we wanted, it is to important to make a statement about our planet in any way we can and what better way than through the the medium of art and creativity.

Hidden Secrets of the Earth (Deep Earth) | Five Fishes of the Sea (Ocean) |
Artist Statement
Five Fishes of the Sea:
Fish and water have been recurring themes in my work. I love the never ceasing movement of both the fish and the water and enjoy trying to distill all these elements into a moment in time when the fish hang still in the water, suspended for a moment before they dart away.
Hidden Secrets of the Earth:
This mosaic is inspired by the colours, textures, patterns and fossils found in rock formations. I did not want to try and copy nature directly, but rather to collect these inspirations together into one piece of work.
This mosaic links contemporary and timeless materials made by both man and nature.

Raindrops | Seasons | Ammonite |
Artist Statement
I live to walk in the countryside, where I am struck by the profusion of shapes and colours which aggregate into beautiful, complex patterns. With my mosaics I am trying to capture the fluid nature of these patterns using hard unyielding pieces of ceramic and glass. I intend my designs to stand as testament to the wonders all around us and in so doing, I hope, inspire people to do all they can to help preserve our world for future generations.
Raindrops (Ocean)
The image of ' a drop in the ocean' speaks about the vastness of oceanic processes; the drops are no more, but the effects of their being can be seen in the ripples, while the consequences of their being can be seen in the patterns created by their interactions.
If we took a drop to represent a human being then the expanding ripples would represent human influence, our actions and interactions which profoundly affect life on our planet.
Seasons (Climate change)
With this mosaic I am trying to convey the idea of a balanced world with predictable cyclic regularity; seasonal, lunar, solar, yin-yang. This is an ideal. Climate change hints at a world in the balance, on the edge. If we don't work towards the ideal of a balanced world we may end up with a world out of balance, over the edge and into the abyss.
Ammonite (Deep Earth)
The Ammonite reminds me of the fragility of life and the immaturity of the human race. Ammonites existed in the worlds oceans for about 340 million years before going extinct 65 million years ago, long before the first appearance of modern man a mere 200,000 years ago. So long have ammonites been dead that they have been assimilated into the earth's crust, fossilization has turned animal into mineral, creating a thing of beauty which tells us so much about the story of this planet earth.
