When I was given the theme "Heavens Above" I was inspired by the idea of possible religous mosaics. I saw a picture of St Catherine and liked it, for me this was a challenge to my skills as a mosaic artist as I have never created a person in mosaic before.
eavens above” may suggest a range of connotations but one of awe springs to mind, specifically when confronted with an aspect of nature or in contemplating the vastness of space. The work offers a visual translation of this response.
Flaunys |
Debra Tracey
'Flaunys' - stained glass, millifiori, reclaimed glass kiln fired cabouchons, gold leaf tesserae, sand and pigment, ceramic tile and iridescent glass tile on ply. 15" Diameter.
Flaunys means Heaven or Paradise, in Manx. The inspiration for this piece is embedded in Manx history, plus Manx sand and reclaimed glass has been used to create some of the cabouchons. My aim was to create a piece rich in texture and imagination.

Kochab & Mizar |
Pauline Virgo
Ancient Egyptian astronomers aligned pyramids due north using two stars that circle the celestial polar point. The north-finding stars were Kochab and Mizar.
Kochab and Mizar circle around the North Pole, and as you can always see them, the Egyptians referred to them as ‘The Indestructibles’. They became closely associated with eternity and the King’s afterlife.
In laying the pyramids out towards these stars it was hoped that the King would join the circumpolar stars after death.
But, the alignment was only true for a few years around 2,500 BC. The orientation of the pyramids built earlier, and later, therefore tracks the slow drift of Kochab and Mizar with respect to true North.
I created this mosaic, inspired by a theory that combines science with faith.
Materials: Stained glass, ceramic tiles, coloured mirror, and polymer clay scarabs.
