The Hubble Telescope has provided us with glimpses of an awesome and unspeakably live and colorful universe. It is fantastic to view the universe in all its majesty and power and to see where stars are formed and whole solar systems originate.
These views of something so unimaginably huge can either make us feel incredibly small or tremendously significant as part of something so rich, complex, and endless. I choose the latter.
I wanted to capture the movement and brilliance in these structures and embarked on a series of mosaics entitled “Heavenly Bodies.” My “Orion Nebula,” is one of several, and utilizes a rich variety of material from cleaved dessert roses, to semi-precious stones, smalti, glass and beads. This is my interruption of the Orion Nebula, a small glimpse into eternity.

QEM School Mosaic

Margaret Carney & QEM School
The Mosaic is a memorial to Helen Taggart, a teacher at QEMS who died two years ago. Three students, Jenny Helm, Becky Lowe and Stephanie Downes have completed the majority of the mosaic but they also organised for the whole school to lay a tile each in the rainbow section. The mosaic represents Helens' love of travel and her wish that all students should be the best they can be. The doves represent the students wishes for peace, the sunrays hope for the future.
The mosaic is 4'X4'.
